Photovoltaic solar power

Photovoltaic solar power is the name given to a method of obtaining electricity from solar panels.

On a large scale, direct electrical current provided by the solar panels can be transformed into alternating current and injected into the electricity network. The process, simplified, would be as follows: Energy is generated at low voltage (800 V) and as direct current. It is transformed into alternating current with an inverter. It is converted through a transformer into medium voltage (15 or 25 kV) and injected into the company’s transmission network.

The important thing about photovoltaic panels is the solar radiation, not the heat, meaning that it is important to locate the solar energy plants in places with the highest number of sun-hours per day.

In Spain, according to the objective of the P.R.E. to reach production of 12% of primary power with renewable sources, it is anticipated to have 400 Mwp of Photovoltaic Solar Power installed by the year 2010, which will produce 1,360 Gwh of energy, and will prevent 206,000 tons of CO2 emission from going into the atmosphere every year.
