Biomass energy

The Spanish Association for Standardisation and Certification (AENOR), uses the definition from the European Technical Specification CEN/TS 14588 to classify “biomass” as being “all material of biological origin excluding material embedded in geological formations and transformed to fossil fuel”.

Biomass energy production plants are supplied with a wide range of biofuels. This diversity continues in the uses of energy produced with biomass, which can be used for heating and hot water in the domestic sector (single housing, residential complexes, districts or entire towns), heat for industrial processes and for generating electricity.

The potential resources of biomass calculated by the Institute for Energy Saving and Diversification (IDEA) for the development of the P.R.E. are in excess of 17 million tons of oil equivalent (toe), more than three times the increase established in the P.R.E. for the year 2010.

Among these resources are the energy crops which, with a potential that is higher than 7 toe, are an alternative to traditional agricultural crops, currently in recession.

  IBEREN RENOVABLES and Biomass activity

There are plans for various alternatives, some of which can be combined with thermosolar technology.

At the present time, exhaustive research is under way for cultivating energy crops that can be used exclusively in biomass.
