Hydroelectric power

Under the heading of renewable energy is hydroelectric power, one of the main allies in the generating of clean, indigenous energy.

Technological advances enable electricity to be obtained in watercourses of very different characteristics.

In accordance with Act 54/1997 on the Electricity Sector, the Plan for Renewable Energy 2005-2010 was drawn up and approved, whereby in the field of hydroelectric power an increased capacity of 450 MW is established for power stations of less than 10 MW and of 360 MW for power stations between 10 and 50 MW of installed capacity.

Hydroelectric power, that indirectly comes from solar energy, shares the advantages of being indigenous, clean and inexhaustible, that are inherent to the rest of the renewable energies.

The average annual production of hydroelectric power worldwide stands at 2,600 TWh, which represents approximately 19% of the total electricity produced. The installed hydroelectric capacity on a worldwide level amounts to 700 GW.

On a large scale, this source of energy has a limited field of expansion, as in the more developed countries, the majority of large rivers already have one or more hydropower stations, and in the developing countries, big projects can come up against financing, environmental and social obstacles.

  IBEREN RENOVABLES and hydroelectric activity

In this field, the current European situation is based on a reduction in investment due to radical attitudes in respect of environmental views. Here at IBEREN RENOVABLES, hydroelectric activity is considered to be an interesting, clean source of renewable energy, for which reason research has been started in Andalusia (Spain) and in Brazil for installing and operating small, mini-hydraulic plants.
